Summary

  • The page pane's watcher menu said "Nothing is watching this page" for pages that were being watched, contradicting the page header's own "An agent is watching" badge.
  • The menu now reads the org-wide watch state alongside the host's local list and reports three states instead of two, naming the watcher even when it isn't one this host runs.

Why / Context

The two surfaces answer different questions and the menu was printing one as the other.

The badge on the page (apps/web/.../PageWatchBadge.tsx) reads watchState() — the pages row's watchedByAgent + watchHeartbeatAt, fresh within 90s. That's org-wide: any host, any workspace.

The menu read usePageWatchers(workspaceId) → PageWatchManager.list(workspaceId), which is one host's in-memory map, filtered to one workspace:

for (const entry of this.entries.values()) {
    if (workspaceId && entry.workspaceId !== workspaceId) continue;

Only host services write the DB flag, so the DB is the union of every host's map and the menu was showing one slice of it. Reproducible three ways, all normal usage:

  1. An agent in workspace A watches the page; you open it from workspace B — WorkspacePagesMenu lists org-wide favorites and opens them in whatever workspace you're in.
  2. The watcher is on another machine.
  3. The watcher is in a cloud workspace.

In each case the truth is "yes, an agent is watching, and comments you leave reach it." The menu said the opposite.

How It Works

PageWatcherMenu now also runs cloudTrpc.page.get — the same query and the same 30s/5min polling the web badge uses — and falls back to it when the host has no local entry:

const watcher = pageId ? watchers.get(pageId) : undefined;   // host-local, authoritative
const elsewhere =
    !watcher && cloudWatch.data?.watch.watching === true      // org-wide fallback
        ? cloudWatch.data.watch
        : null;
State Trigger chip Menu label Stop watching
Watched from this workspace dot + agent name "Comments go to this agent" yes, unchanged
Watched elsewhere (new) dot + agent name, or "An agent" "Watched by an agent in another workspace" no — read-only
Not watched Bot icon "Nothing is watching this page" no

The assignable-terminal list is untouched: in the elsewhere state you can still pick a local agent, which takes over the watch.

Both mutations now invalidate the cloud query onSettled. Without it a local Stop watching would leave the cached flag true and relabel the page as watched-from-elsewhere for up to 30s — a new wrong answer in place of the old one.

Manual QA Checklist

Watched from this workspace (regression)

  • Publish a page from an agent terminal; the chip names the agent and the menu says "Comments go to this agent"
  • "Stop watching" clears it, and the menu drops to "Nothing is watching this page" immediately — not to the elsewhere label
  • The check mark still marks the terminal doing the watching

Watched elsewhere (the fix)

  • With a page watched by an agent in workspace A, open it from workspace B: menu reads "Watched by an agent in another workspace" and the chip names the agent
  • The page header badge and the menu now agree
  • No "Stop watching" row in this state
  • Assigning a local agent from this state takes over: label flips to "Comments go to this agent"

Not watched

  • A page with no watcher still reads "Nothing is watching this page"
  • Trigger shows the Bot icon, no status dot

General

  • No console errors in the renderer
  • Switch app language (e.g. ja, de) and confirm both new strings render translated

Testing

  • bun run --filter @superset/desktop typecheck
  • bun run lint:fix — clean
  • bun run check:i18n — all 17 locales compile under --strict
  • bun run sherif — no issues
  • bun test in packages/i18n — 157 pass
  • bun test PageWatcherMenu.test.tsx — 7 new tests, one per state, covering that the elsewhere state neither says "Nothing is watching this page" nor offers Stop watching

Not run: the full desktop suite, and bun run lint:check-node-imports (no such script in this repo any more). No Node imports were added — the change is one tRPC query in an existing renderer component.

Design Decisions

  • Read-only in the elsewhere state, rather than a working Stop watching. Clearing watchedByAgent from here would not touch the remote PageWatchManager's entry, and its next maybeHeartbeat (≤60s) would write the flag straight back — the watcher would appear to stop and then return. Making it stick needs a signal the remote manager can see, which is more than this fix is worth.
  • A separate page.get query rather than reading PageViewer's page.pull. pull presigns download URLs; polling it every 30s to track a heartbeat is wasteful. page.get is what the web badge already polls, so both surfaces now share a query shape.

Known Limitations

  • Assigning a local agent to a page watched elsewhere leaves both managers holding an entry, and their heartbeats fight over watchedByAgent until the remote one times out. Same root cause as the item below: a remote host has no way to hear that it lost the watch.
  • PageWatchManager.stop() clears its entries without calling clearWatch, so a host shutdown leaves the DB flag set until watchHeartbeatAt goes stale (≤90s). Deliberately out of scope.
  • The menu only renders for pages you own (PagePaneHeaderExtras gates on createdByUserId), so a page you don't own shows no watch information at all. Unchanged, also out of scope.

Follow-ups

  • Give the manager a way to notice a cleared flag, which would unlock a working Stop watching for remote watchers and settle the assign-takeover race.
  • Clear watch flags on graceful host shutdown.

Summary by cubic

Fixes the page watcher menu so it no longer falsely claims nothing watches a page that an agent on another host, workspace, or machine is watching, and now lists the actual watchers.

The menu previously read a single host's in-memory watch list and printed "Nothing is watching this page" for watchers that host couldn't see. It now gathers live watchers from every reachable host, names each session with its workspace, and links to the terminal. Watchers it can't enumerate are covered by the org-wide page flag and reported as such. Stop watching and the hand-off list are removed. A sandbox host is only queried while its workspace is on screen.

  • The watcher menu now shows nothing when no one watches a page, instead of "Nothing is watching this page".
  • Each watcher row carries the session title, names the workspace, and links to that agent's terminal.
  • Unnamed agents show as "An agent", and watchers on unreachable hosts show a status message.
  • Ending a watch now clears the badge within ~400ms; the flag is cleared before the host notifies, where it previously lingered up to 30s.
  • New tests cover local, remote, unnamed, and unwatched pages; new strings are translated in all 17 locales.

Written for commit 8cf8d67. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Page watcher indicators show the number of local agents watching and list their workspace and session details when available.
    • Selecting a local watcher opens its workspace. Watchers on unreachable hosts display a status message, with “An agent” shown when no name is available.
    • The watcher menu appears only when a page has watchers.
  • Localization
    • Updated watcher-related translations, including wording for comments directed to one or multiple agents.

The menu asked the host service "which pages is this workspace watching?"
and printed the answer as if it were "is anyone watching this page?".
Those are different questions: PageWatchManager keeps its entries in one
host's memory and list() filters them by workspaceId, while the badge on
the page itself reads the org-wide watchedByAgent flag. A page watched by
an agent in another workspace, on another machine, or in a cloud sandbox
is absent from the local list, so the menu said "Nothing is watching this
page" while the page header said an agent was.

The menu now reads page.get's watch state alongside the host's list, with
the same polling the web badge uses, and reports three states instead of
two. A watcher this host runs keeps everything it had, including Stop
watching. A watcher it cannot reach is named but read-only: clearing the
org-wide flag from here would not touch the other host's entry, and its
next heartbeat would set the flag straight back.

Both mutations invalidate the cloud query on settle. Without that, a local
Stop watching would leave the cached flag true and relabel the page as
watched from elsewhere for up to thirty seconds.

zh-TW and nl already have a word for watching a page — 關注 and volgen,
used by "Nothing is watching this page" and "Stop watching" — and the new
status ignored both. German declines Agent weakly everywhere else in the
catalog, 33 times against three exceptions; the new string was one of
them, and so was the menu's own "Comments go to this agent".

@harshithmullapudi thanks for the fix. I ran it in the app. The closed state now agrees with the page badge, but the open menu reads oddly: the watching agent appears only on the button, the menu's only row is a different agent, and "Watched by an agent in another workspace" names a place the menu can't know (it also appears for up to 90s after this host restarts, when the watcher was this workspace).

Let's redesign it in this PR instead of merging the interim label. Mockups of the desired states and the implementation spec are here:
https://app.superset.sh/page/page-watcher-redesign-show-the-agent-not-a-sentenc-90ihy6

Short version:

  • Nothing watching: show nothing.
  • Watched: show the agent. If you can open its host, clicking it goes straight to that agent's terminal. If you can't, it's shown without a link.
  • Several watchers: a list, each one a link.
  • The data change behind it: a page_watches table (host, workspace and terminal per watcher) replaces the watched_by_agent flag and heartbeat on pages, and liveness comes from relay presence. That fixes the 90s ghost watchers, the two-host overwrite, and remote Stop watching too.

There are three open points at the bottom of the page. Pick whichever you prefer on each.

@harshithmullapudi the design has moved on since my last comment. The page is updated at the same link:
https://app.superset.sh/page/page-watcher-redesign-show-the-agent-not-a-sentenc-90ihy6

Where it landed:

  • Nothing watching: nothing in the header.
  • Watched: a robot badge with a live dot, plus a count when more than one agent is watching. The header shows no names and no tooltip copy.
  • Open the badge: one row per watcher, with the agent's real icon (AgentIcon / getPresetIcon), the terminal session's name (sessionDisplayTitle: the user's rename, else the agent's title), and its workspace name. Rows on hosts you can open have ↗ and go to that terminal via navigateToV2Workspace. The others are plain.
  • No Stop watching in the header. A watch ends when its agent exits or via superset pages watch stop.

The spec now also covers:

  • session_title and the workspace name on each watcher. The title is copied onto the row by the host when it changes, rate-limited. The workspace name is joined from v2_workspaces.
  • Refreshing the list on page-watch:changed, so an agent that exited or was stopped from the CLI doesn't stay listed for up to 30s.

The rest is as in my last comment: a page_watches table plus relay presence, replacing the heartbeat flag.

…them

The watcher control now reads as a list of watchers rather than a claim
about one. Nothing watching renders nothing; one or more shows a robot
badge with a live dot and a count, and opening it names each watching
session, the workspace it sits in, and links to that agent's terminal.

The watcher list is gathered by asking each host this machine can already
reach for its own list, so a host that answers is reporting live state:
no heartbeat to age out, and no per-host liveness rule to get wrong. A
sandbox is only asked while it is the workspace on screen, since every
request to one holds its VM awake. The page row's org-wide flag still
covers the watcher we cannot enumerate, which is reported as such instead
of as "nothing is watching".

Drops the hand-off list and Stop watching: a watch starts by publishing
from the agent, and ends where the agent is, which the list now links to.

Pushed 0fc74e30 — the watcher control is now a list of who is watching rather than a picker that asks you to choose.

Before / after, recorded in the running app: https://app.superset.sh/page/page-watcher-redesign-before-and-after-y4vnh0

This is option B from the discussion on the redesign page: the visual redesign, without the page_watches table. The desktop already knows how to ask a host what it is watching (pageWatch.getAll); the old menu just called it scoped to one workspace. Fanning out across the hosts this machine can already reach gets the whole list with no schema change and no migration.

What that buys:

  • Liveness is free. A host's in-memory map is current by construction — no heartbeat to age out, no relay presence to get wrong.
  • reachable is free. If the host answered, it is reachable by definition. No v2_users_hosts check.
  • The workspace name is already local, which matters because the spec's workspaceName join has nothing to join to: v2_workspaces is vestigial (v2-workspace.ts:1 says so, list returns [], create never touches the database, and nothing inserts into it anywhere in the repo).
  • The cloud-sandbox problem never arises. serve.ts:165 skips connectRelay in sandbox mode, and connectRelay is the only caller of host.ensure — so a sandbox host has no presence entry and no v2_hosts row. Presence-based liveness would have hidden every cloud-workspace watcher, which is repro case 3 of this PR.

What it gives up: a watcher on a host you cannot reach gets no named row. It is reported as "an agent is watching, on a host you can't reach" instead of itemised — the same information the old sentence carried, just not broken out per watcher.

Also dropped: the hand-off list and Stop watching. A watch starts by publishing from the agent and ends where the agent is, which the list now links to.

Verification is on the page: real project, real workspace, real agent session, a real watch registered through the host service's own pageWatch.assign, menu opened with dispatched mouse input. Unit tests: 10 passing in PageWatcherMenu.test.tsx.

Expose whether host queries have settled.

The hook returns only rows. A caller cannot tell "no watcher found" apart from "host queries still loading".

PageWatcherMenu uses watchers.length === 0 to decide watchedElsewhere. This case happens when a watcher runs locally, the cloud flag says watching, and the host query has not resolved yet (first open, or a new host target). The menu then shows "On a host you can't reach" for a local watcher, and the label switches once the data arrives.

Return a settled flag with the rows. Use result.isPending from the queries for this flag.

Use wording that works for Indonesian plural rules.

Indonesian has only the CLDR cardinal category other, so a count of 1 selects this branch too. “Agen-agen ini” refers to multiple agents, even when one watcher is present. Use wording that does not encode singular or plural in either branch. (unicode.org)

Use a number-neutral translation for the other plural branch.

Japanese uses only the other cardinal plural category, so this branch is selected even when there is one watcher. “これらのエージェント” implies multiple agents and misstates the recipient. Use number-neutral text such as コメントは監視中のエージェントに送られます. (unicode.org)

At 288px the row spent its width on the workspace name and truncated the
session to "Release notes ag…", which is the part that identifies the
agent. The menu is 320px now, matching the design, and the session name
takes the slack instead of the workspace.

Before / after, in the real app

Folded Satya's redesign page into this PR. Clips of both builds, same page, same live watcher, same workspace:

https://app.superset.sh/page/page-watcher-before-and-after-7724-hobrt2

Before — the trigger names claude, but the menu under it is the hand-off list, not the watcher: "Comments go to this agent" sits directly above "No agents running here".

After — a robot badge with a live dot. Opening it names the watching session, the workspace it sits in, and ↗ opens that agent's terminal. The hand-off list and "Stop watching" are gone; a watch starts by publishing from the agent and ends where the agent is.

Why not the page_watches table the design page specified

Three things in that spec don't hold against the repo, and all three disappear if the desktop asks each reachable host for its own list:

  1. v2_workspaces is vestigial — packages/trpc/src/router/v2-workspace/v2-workspace.ts:1 says so, list returns [], create synthesizes a row without touching the DB, and there is no insert(v2Workspaces) in the repo. The workspaceName join would come back empty for every row, local hosts included.
  2. Cloud sandboxes never connect to the relay — packages/host-service/src/serve.ts:165 skips connectRelay when SUPERSET_HOST_RUN_MODE === "sandbox", and connectRelay is the only caller of host.ensure. No presence entry, so presence can't be the liveness rule.
  3. The same gap breaks reachable — it routes through a v2_users_hosts row a sandbox never gets, stripping the ↗ from exactly the rows that are openable (the desktop reaches cloud workspaces through the sandbox gate, keyed on workspaceId).

A host that answers is reporting live in-memory state, so there's no heartbeat to age out and no per-host liveness rule to get wrong. A sandbox is only asked while it's the workspace on screen, since every request holds its VM awake. The page row's org-wide flag still covers a watcher we can't enumerate, reported as "On a host you can't reach" rather than as "nothing is watching".

Not covered by the clips

The multi-watcher badge count. One host keys its watch map by page id, so two watchers on one page need two hosts, which a single-host dev stack can't produce. That state is covered by unit tests.

Checks

bun test PageWatcherMenu.test.tsx (10 pass) · desktop + host-service typecheck · lint:fix · check:i18n (all 17 locales compile under --strict) · sherif

@harshithmullapudi thanks. Asking each reachable host is the right call here, and you're right on both corrections: v2_workspaces is vestigial, and sandboxes never connect to the relay.

One note for later, not for this PR: per-page presence would probably be the long-term shape. That's a Durable Object per page in apps/realtime (next to OrgHub) at a stable URL like /v2/page/<id>:

  • Watchers hold a socket to it, so the connection is the liveness. A sandbox only needs an outbound socket, not the relay.
  • Viewers subscribe to the same URL and get the watcher list pushed to them, so no one has to ask every host.
  • New comments could reach watchers the same way, which would replace the 5s listThreads poll.

It would also retire the pages.watched_by_agent heartbeat that the "host you can't reach" line still depends on. That's not a big deal for now, and nothing to change here. I'm checking the UI in the app next.

… reach"

When a local agent stopped watching a page, the watcher menu kept its badge
for up to 30s and listed the agent as "On a host you can't reach". The host
lists refreshed on page-watch:changed, but the org-wide page.get flag that
feeds the unreachable row did not, and the host announced the change before
clearing that flag, so even a refetch could read the old value.

Refresh page.get on page-watch:changed, and clear the flag before notifying.
Verified in the running app: the badge now clears in 300-400ms after unwatch,
down from 33s+.
